Weekly report

We introduced the definition of Pneumonia and the causes briefly last week. So
What’s the main treatment for it ?
How to prevent the disease?
What’s the link between Pneumonia and COPD ?
Let’s discuss step by step
1.     What’s the main treatment for it ?
The treatments depend on the type of the pneumonia and its severity.  Mild cases of pneumonia can usually be treated at home with antibiotics and plenty of rest and fluids. More severe cases may need hospital treatment.
Most important to keep in mind, we shall get plenty of rest and sleep and drink lots of fluids

2.     How to prevent the disease?
Bacteria or viruses usually cause pneumonia, we shall take the steps to kill them or stay away from them
l  The most common used way is the vaccinations. Children get the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) as a routine vaccination. Older adults (age 65 or older), people who smoke, and people who have some long-term (chronic) conditions also need the pneumococcal vaccine. Depending on age and other things, adults can get PCV or the pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV). Some adults need both types
l  Wash your hands with soap and water or alcohol-based rubs to kill germs.
l  Stop smoking. Smoking damages our lungs' ability to filter out and defend against germs.
l  Stay away from people who have colds, the flu, or other respiratory tract infections.

3. What’s the link between Pneumonia and COPD ?
Pneumonia and COPD work as a sort of a vicious circle in that one can greatly impact the other, making symptoms more severe and dangerous for the patient. COPD and pneumonia are known risk factors for respiratory failure so when you combine the two it is especially serious. COPD exacerbations are easy to be caused by bacterial infections.
In later stage of COPD, the symptoms of worsening COPD or an exacerbation and pneumonia are often quite similar. So inform the doctor about any changes for the symptoms is very important.
Common symptoms in COPD, which get worse in later stages and during exacerbations include:
cough
shortness of breath
sputum production
wheezing
chest tightness
Pneumonia causes all of the same symptoms as listed above, but can also cause:
high fever
chills and shaking
chest pain when coughing or breathing
More common in COPD exacerbations and pneumonia is:
inability to speak due to a lack of air
change in color of your mucus that could be green, tan, yellow, or bloody
high fever
inability to get your usual relief from your COPD medication

Regardless of whether you are experiencing a COPD exacerbation or have developed pneumonia, getting medical treatment as quickly as possibly is key. The sooner you are able to receive treatment and get your symptoms under control, the less damage that pneumonia is able to cause your lungs which are already damaged from COPD.  This damage can include inflammation that further limits your airflow and causes irreversible damage to your lung tissue. The most serious complication of pneumonia is respiratory failure. And the acute respiratory failure is one of the leading causes of concerns when a COPD patient develops pneumonia.

Weekly report

Pneumonia

In the following several weeks, we are going to introduce and share the information about Pneumonia and the link for Pneumonia &COPD. As we know, the people with COPD are known to be at a higher risk of pneumonia, it is necessary for us to know more about them. And this week, let’s introduce what is Pneumonia.

Pneumonia is a lung infection that can make you very sick. You may cough, run a fever, and have a hard time breathing. For most people, pneumonia can be treated at home. It often clears up in 2 to 3 weeks. But older adults, babies, and people with other diseases can become very ill. They may need to be in the hospital.

Germs called bacteria or viruses usually cause pneumonia.Pneumonia usually starts when you breathe the germs into your lungs. You may be more likely to get the disease after having a cold or the flu. These illnesses make it hard for your lungs to fight infection, so it is easier to get pneumonia. Having a long-term, or chronic, disease like asthma, heart disease, cancer, or diabetes also makes you more likely to get pneumonia.

Symptoms of pneumonia caused by bacteria usually come on quickly. They may include:
Cough. You will likely cough up mucus (sputum) from your lungs. Mucus may be rusty or green or tinged with blood.
Fever.
Fast breathing and feeling short of breath.
Shaking and "teeth-chattering" chills.
Chest pain that often feels worse when you cough or breathe in.
Fast heartbeat.
Feeling very tired or very weak.
Nausea and vomiting.
Diarrhea.
Symptoms caused by viruses are the same as those caused by bacteria. But they may come on slowly and often are not as obvious or as bad

Mainly, the pneumonia is devided into two kinds, community-associated pneumonia and healthcare-associated pneumonia. The former is the pneumonia you get in your daily life, such as at school or work. The later is the pneumonia getted when you are in a hospital or nursing home. It is usually caused by a bacterial infection, rather than a virus.

Weekly report

What’s the 6 minutes walk test(6MWT) ?

6 minutes walk test, we call 6MWT. It is one of the most common used way to assess the exercise capacity for people who suffer from the COPD.

The test dates from the early 1960s, A 12-minute field performance test was then developed to evaluate the level of physical fitness of healthy individuals. The walking test was also adapted to assess disability in patients with chronic bronchitis. In an attempt to accommodate patients with respiratory disease for whom walking 12 minutes was too exhausting, a 6-minute walk was found to perform as well as the 12-minute walk. There are many existing tests to assess the patients’ functional status, such as the questionnaire survey or self-assessment, climbing stairs, bicycle exercise test,6MWT ect, among of them the 6MWT is easy to administer, better tolerated, and more reflective of activities of daily living than the other walk tests. Due to these, the 6MWT has got more and more attention.

While testing, the 6MWT requires a 100-ft hallway but no exercise equipment or advanced training for technicians. The test measures the distance of the patients quickly able to walk on a flat, hard surface within 6 minutes. It evaluates the global and integrated responses of all the systems involved during exercise, including the pulmonary and cardiovascular systems, systemic circulation, peripheral circulation, blood, neuromuscular units, and muscle metabolism. But as the test doesn’t reach the extremity for the cardiopulmonary exercise capacity, it can’t be applied to evaluate the accumulating capacity of cardio-pulmonary function.

The old year 2014 is going to pass and the new year of 2015 is coming. Happy New Year to everyone. Wish we will more positive and keep fighting with the COPD.

According  to  the 2014 offcial statement of European Respiratory Society, COPD is affecting about 10% of the adult population above 40 years of age. It is such a burden and make the life being so different. If you’re diagnosed, the stress or depression may grow, what’s more they’ll be worse during the holiday season. Like the present Christmas & New Year season. For the people who are healthy and free of chronic disease, the holidays can be so great. For you(with COPD),it can be the opposite.

One tip to make the holiday better is let’s face it and using suggestion and autosuggestion. Tell youself in heart “I allow it”, “I allow the situation I am facing”, “I can enjoy the holiday”. Remember that the holiday is only a short period.

Second tip is with a little planning and some clever thinking, such as shop online, balance the eating, share the feeing with families or friends, do the usual walk.

The third tip is take care of yourself, Don’t deprive yourself of sleep, healthy meals or regular exercise. Be self-aware.

Weekly report

The role of airway inflammation in COPD

COPD, which is caused by long-term inhalation of toxic gases and particles, is a disease characterized by airflow limitation that is not fully reversible, showing a progressive decline in FEV1, increasing shortness of breath, and ultimately respiratory failure. The airflow limitation is with gradually development. Smoking is the main reasons as well as the air pollution, bedroom environment pollution and some occupational factors. The pathophysiology caused by these factors are very similar, that is airway inflammation.

Airway inflammation is a key part to COPD, leads to nearly all the changes of structure and function.

The airway remodeling is the result made by the repeated abnormal repair from chronic inflammatory injury of small airway,
Destruction of lung parenchyma(emphysema) is caused by the protease released by pulmonary inflammatory cells.
The Glands hyperplasia and high production is resulted from the protease/ Proinflammatory mediators/ oxide released by inflammatory cells.
The prominent features for Acute exacerbation phase of COPD is the aggravating and magnified of airway inflammation.

Thus we know ,the airway inflammation acts a leading role during the progression of COPD. It is a ongoing problem in the lungs, there are no effective measures to eliminate it, even quit smoking.

Lovego weekly report-How to train efficient coughing?

How to train efficient coughing?

Coughing is a reflex, they are triggered by the body when it needs to remove irritants and mucus from the airways. Such receptor on Respiratory tract mucous membrane is under microorganisms and physical or chemical stimulation. The reflex is a kind of defence, keeping the clean and unobstructed. Many people think we born to cough, and there is no need to train, but the fact is many COPD patients are doing useless cough, not only cause physical exhaustion, but also sometimes come with bronchismus, aggravate the shortness of breath at the same time. So, only know how to efficient coughing, can promote the drainage of bronchus secretions efficiently.

Below is several steps to practice the action for coughing.

1.     Take a big deep breath, filling the lungs as completely as possible.

2.     Hold your breath for a moment, and the trunk forward slightly.

3.     Bending both arms and lying flat on the two sides blew the chest, Slightly adduction and pressure

4.     When cough musculi abdominis effort contraction, abdominal wall invagination, you can have three continuously “mini cough”

5.     Then, stop coughing, and shrinking the lip to exhale the rest gas.

6.     Inhaling slowly or calmly for a moment, be ready to cough again

If the deep breath leads to the cough, try to inhale intermittent for several times, it helps to strive for the pulmonary alveolus to gasify fully, increases the cough efficiency.

And another tip for the training is paying attention to the continuity of the action, finish at a dash.

Lovego weekly report-Salt therapy

LoveGo, Go Along With Love!
Your Second Doctor

Weekly report

         Salt therapy

Salt therapy (speleotherapy) originated in eastern Europe in the 19th century, it is a 100% natural, non-invasive treatment where dry salt particles are inhaled. The method is used to relieve respiratory problems and treat skin disorders. For those in good health it can help to improve general wellbeing and boost immunity as well. To carry the method, you can sit down in a salt cave or buy Halotherapy devices to use it at home.

So how does the salt therapy work? What are the benefits we can get? And how does the effect to COPD? Pls follow, let’s discover them.

1.How does the salt therapy work?
The dry-salt enriched air contains tiny salt particles that are easily inhaled with natural breathing. By sitting in the Salt Room for a prolonged period, low concentrations of salt are delivered to where it is most needed – deep in the lungs, where the salt then dissolves phlegm in the bronchial tubes and kills micro-organisms that cause infections. The phlegm, allergens, bacteria and any small impurities are later coughed up by the patient or leave the body through other natural metabolic ways. The treatment works to reduce the basis of inflammation by destroying bacteria and strengthening the immune system.

2.What are the main benefits we can get ?

1)Salt has the natural property of being able to absorb. As microscopic salt particles are inhaled- it is able to thin out and absorb the extra mucus- allowing a person to more easily release the mucus. Mucus is released through the nose, mouth and stool. The salt is able to reach the lower lobes of the lungs and the upper sinuses (where conventional medicine cannot) because of the size of the salt particles. The salt particles are between 3-5 microns.
2)Salt is a natural antiseptic and natural anti inflammatory. The salt is able to kill germs in the respiratory system (which can cause the over production of mucus in many situations) and manage inflammation in the entire respiratory system.
3)The salt in the salt room is naturally 98% sodium chloride. Sodium chloride has the property of being able to convert positive ions into negative ions.

3.How does the effect for treating COPD ?

We know, Cough with mucus, easy to be in infection, shortness of breath are the main symptoms of COPD. By inhaling the salt particles, the salt will help to kill the bacteria, help to release mucus, thus, after the therapy it will make your breathing easier, improve lung function, Alleviate sneezing, coughing, and shortness of breathClear mucus and sticky phlegm from the lungs

Some people have tried the treatment and love it,some are not, below is some feedbacks,

We suggest that the salt therapy can be a adjuvant therapy according to the severity of the COPD, just try it and then decide it.
