The damage of Hypoxia

Hypoxia refers to be lack of oxygen in the body. Because of the low oxygen levels in the blood, the carried oxygen to other organs and tissues is not enough, then, each system of the body will be affected. The short time hypoxia can cause body feeling unwell, for a long time hypoxia, it can cause tissue lesions.

Mainly, there are three kinds of reasons that lead to the hypoxia. The first one is the barrier type for oxygen intake. The respiratory disease like asthma and COPD ect are the main hypoxia cases; The second one is transport barriers, we know the oxygen is mainly transported by the blood, if it happens problem, then it will cause the human tissue hypoxia and the result is lesions. The coronary heart disease, atherosclerosis, cerebrovascular disease and anemia belong to this kind. The third one is excessive consumption type, the most common is those who overstrain their nerves.

Hypoxia will bring much damage to our bodies, and below are the main clinical manifestations of the hypoxia for main organs:

1. Cerebral anoxia: The brain's response to hypoxia is extremely obvious. To a able-bodied person, the weight of the brain is 2% of the total body, but its oxygen consumption accounts for 20% of the total ones, accounts for 1/6 of the oxygen in the blood (cardiac output). If the brain is anoxic,  then, the headache/ restlessness/ drowsiness and encephaledema will happen; If the anoxia lasts above 4mins, then the brain cell will be irreversible necrotic, and comes to disturbance of consciousness, hyperspasmia, coma and finally death.
2.Heart Hypoxia:  For the mild hypoxia, it will increase myocardial contraction, quicken the heart rate, enlarge the cardiac output, increase the pressure or make the pressure decline. If it is severe, both the blood pressure and heart rate will decline, then it will lead to the myocardial necrosis, cardiac failure, cardiac arrhythmia, shock, even the sudden cardiac arrest.
3. Lung Hypoxia: to the mild hypoxia, breathing movement increases and the breath becomes faster and deeper. If it is severe, the respiratory center will be inhibited, and then leads to dyspnea, breathing arhythmicity, cyanosis, laryngeal edema, pulmonary edema, artery contraction, and enhance the pressure of pulmonary vascular resistance & pressure of artery.
4. Liver hypoxia: it will make the liver function lesion been damaged and occur Liver edema, ect.
5. Retinal hypoxia: we’ll have dim eyesight and be loss of vision.
6. Renal hypoxia: it can cause kidney disorders, oliguria, no urine, easily induced urinary tract infection.
7. Blood hypoxia: we’ll be giddy, flustered, heart beat faster, and be predisposed to high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, thrombosis, myocardial infarction, angina, ect. Meanwhile, the body's immune function will decline and the disease resistance be weaken.
If the body is in a state of chronic hypoxia for a long time, it is easy to cause cancer.

Nowadays, the hypoxia is becoming more and more common, we shall pay enough attention to it.

The devices for oxygen therapy

To carry out the oxygen therapy, there are mainly three kinds of the oxygen devices to choose.

The first one is Compressed oxygen cylinder, this type of oxygen is stored under pressure in steel or aluminum canisters and must be purchased from a supplier. Many hospitals use the steel type. The cylinder shall be connected to the oxygen delivery devices, then can play the role. The advantages of the device are low price, easy to get and no waste or loss. But it is heavy, with small oxygen storage and need to be repeatedly filling. In the market, there are models like 2L, 3L, 4L, 6L, 8L, 10L, 15L, 40L ect. The storage is calculated under 130 ATM(standard atmospheric pressure), 2L=260L oxygen ,3L= 390L oxygen,… 40L = 5200 L oxygen.

The second one is Liquid oxygen. Liquid oxygen is stored at a very cold temperature( around -166.7); it becomes a gas when released from the container. Like compressed gas, liquid oxygen must be purchased and stored in canisters and may include an oxygen-conserving device. 0.028m³liquid oxygen = 24.35 m³gaseous oxygen. The type device can store the liquid oxygen from 18.16~45.4kg, in normal working pressure,0.45kg liquid oxygen equals to 344L gaseous oxygen, that’s to say, one liquid oxygen can store 13760~34400L gaseous oxygen. Usually, the general portable liquid oxygen cylinder is about 4kg. The advantages of the device are low pressure, high oxygen storage, light and easy to refill, it is suitable for long term rehabilitation. But its cost is expensive, easy to be wasted and leakage. When the patient needs to use more than 10 compress oxygen cylinder, suggest to apply this type.

The third one is oxygen concentrators or enrichers. This device uses the electricity and eliminates the N2,CO2 in the air, and then provide higher purity oxygen to the users. There are two kinds at present, one is molecular sieve concentrator which is based on the PSA( Pressure Swing Adsorption), Like the lovego portable oxygen concentrator, Simplygo POC; the other is membrane concentrator, which is based on the different through rate of various gas. The advantages of the devices are no need  to store oxygen and with low cost, more convenient for home LTOT. Of course, the price to buy is a little expensive, with nosie and not easy to move for the stationary type. If you want to go outside, there are many portable types for choosing too.

While choosing the device, we shall take the factors like economic condition/ safty/ product reliability ect into consideration and make a rational choice. Now the oxygen concentrator is more and more hot and acceptable by users.
