Weekly report
Bronchodilator medicines or bronchodilators play an important role
in COPD medicine treatment. They make breathing easier by relaxing the muscles
in the lungs and widening the airways (bronchi). These kinds of medicine can
partly improve the emptying of the lung, decrease the pulmonary hyperinflation
while under rest and doing exercises, as well as improve the exercise capacity.
The bronchodilators can be used as on-demand
treatment for persistent or aggravating respite. Also they can be used as the
regular treatment medicines to prevent and ease the symptoms. But, the effect
of the bronchodilators can’t be calculated by observing the improvement of
FEV1, no matter which stage of the disease.
Mainly, there are three kinds of the most widely used
bronchodilators: beta-2 agonists, anticholinergics and
theophylline. Beta-2 agonists and anticholinergics are available in both
short-acting and long-acting forms, whereas theophylline is only available in a
long-acting form. For the special prescribed, it will be according to the the
severity of the diesease and the patients’ reaction to different medicines. (mark:
short-acting
means which are used as short-term relief from sudden, unexpected
attacks of breathlessness; long-acting forms which have longer-lasting effects
and, if used regularly, can not only help control breathlessness in asthma and
COPD, but also increase the effectiveness of corticosteroids in asthma)
The most common used beta-2 contains agonists are the salbutamol,
terbutaline, clorprenaline, clenbuterol, procaterol, and formoterol. And the saltutamol/terbutaline/clenbuterol/procaterol are short-acting type, which will
work within several mins and get a high works at 10-30 mins. The lasting time
is 4-6 hours.
The anticholinergics like ipratropium bromide and tiotropium
bromide are more often used in clinical. The latter one belongs to the
long-acting type and only need to use once per day.
For the theophylline, it can be devided into anhydrous compound
and Salts. The aminophylline and Choline Theophyllinate are the only two salts
which can be used as the bronchodilators.
